Letters from Patients and Families (Letter published in Tennessean September 18, 2016) RE: “Nursing Home Care Often Lacking” By Nancy Hudgins - Sept. 13, 2016 Based on her letter, I would suspect that Ms. Hudgins has experienced problems at a facility that is or was caring for a family member. If so, I am very sorry that her experiences were less than what they should have been. However, I feel it is unfair to paint all nursing home facilities with a broad brush. I have a family member that has been a dementia patient at Bethany Health and Rehab in south Nashville for one year. He also has a long-time friend who is a resident there. In that time, I have not had one complaint with his care. The staff is competent, caring, efficient, and loving. They treat their residents like they would want their family members treated. I am rarely there when I do not hear, usually from more than one staff member, how much they love Dad, and enjoy helping him. The facility is clean and well maintained and the meals are excellent and varied. Dad is not pushed back in a corner and forgotten. He has daily activities to keep his mind and body as active as possible. Activity records are kept and are available for the resident’s families. And, his medical care is excellent. The staff also takes the time to get to know the resident’s family members, and call us by name when we are visiting. I fully realize that not all facilities operate like Bethany, and her sister facility Trevecca Healthcare. However, I also know that it doesn’t take a lot of research to find the good ones when a family member needs this type of care. There is a rating system that is available online, and I assure you that these two facilities are not the only ones with a 5 out of 5 rating. If you have a family member who needs skilled nursing, or one who might need to move to a more caring facility, take the time to do your research, visit the places you think might work for your family member, and ask lots of questions when you do visit. I think you will find that the facilities who staff from the bottom up instead of the top down, the ones who pay their staff more than others, and who are more interested in resident care than totally concentrating on the bottom line, are out there and waiting to serve you and your family member that might need their care. Jerry Box A debilitating bout with pneumonia in the winter of 2009-2010, and a subsequent bout with MRSA in the spring of 2010, resulted in my husband’s being admitted twice to Bethany, where he was blessed to be cared for by a team of veritable Mother-and Father- Teresas. The dedicated occupational and physical therapists worked tirelessly and creatively to restore my husband’s strength and spirit. The nurses, working in conjunction with medical doctors and a psychologist, meticulously monitored my husband’s status, acknowledging concerns and adjusting treatments as necessary. The techs were ever vigilant to respond to the call button, arriving quickly and cheerfully to do anything from changing bedclothes to holding a hand in reassurance. The maintenance staff were ubiquitous, most notably polishing floors to a mirror finish, with nary a whiff of “nursing home smell.” Food service cooked up an impressive array of tasty, nutritious, and generous meals. While we did not participate in the activities program, we frequently overheard good times as residents enjoyed games and live music or made a joyful noise in the “Church of the Dining Hall”. And from our first to last day, admissions and social services coordinated every aspect of our stay, from our care plan to finances, freeing us to focus our energies solely on encouraging my husband’s recovery. While my husband was the patient, Bethany truly ministered to both of us. Even a year later, we reminisce frequently and most fondly about our second home and family there. Kathy LeCroy “On my stay at Bethany on the hill I met up with old friends Willie and Jill. Willie’s Religion, Rhythm and Exercise, bringing joy to all is no surprise. The faces that were sad, perk up and become glad. Jill with her voice and guitar, harmonica, piano, how great they are. Song writer too, what else can she do. Steve, Sue, Marcia, Regina, so many names, so many faces, from here there many places. I left out many I know but all made my heart aglow. Everyone doing their part surely touches my heart all I can say is thanks and god bless you people are the best Eddie Hinan Since my mother arrived at Bethany Health & Rehabilitation, I’ve been impressed with the quality of care and consideration that has been provided. Like most members of residents, I was eager to determine how my mother was treated when I wasn’t at the facility. At times, I would make unexpected visits during odd hours, and would stand outside my mother’s door, listening to a nurse or caregiver working with my mother. On each (and every) occurrence, I overheard only compassion, kindness and patience. Yes, I am guilty of performing other small “tests” all to ensure I could rest assured my mother has the best care, and I can now say with complete confidence, that my mother has the finest most professional attention. My mother’s care, and the staff members who daily attend to her physical health, personal needs, emotional and general wellbeing are exemplary. Only once, has there been a situation with an employee that made me uncomfortable and potentially concerned about quality of care. That situation actually illustrated for me why I’m so impressed with Bethany. There was instant (and I do mean “instant”) focused attention directed at that situation. A fair and balanced inquiry was made and then swift action was taken to ensure a “less desirable occurrence” could not be repeated. I don’t know how Bethany does it; but, it’s staffed with some of some of the most caring, compassionate, talented, professional individuals I’ve ever seen. The Bethany staff has quickly become an extended family to me, and my family and friends. Thank you for taking care of my mother, as if she was your mother David Bender I was in Southern Hills Hospital for 27 days in intensive care after colon surgery. When they transferred me to Bethany Healthcare I could not stand or walk by myself. I also had a wound that was very complex that had to close from the inside out. The staff was so good and patient with me. I call them my Angels and Doctors. I was there 3 months and by the time I left to go home, I was able to do everything I was doing before surgery. The whole staff was so precious to me, I love Bethany and would recommend it to anyone! I still visit them to uplift some of the residents I met. I made a few friends but love everyone at Bethany. I am now on the volunteer list from Radnor Church of Christ. I can’t do too much but I can help with some of the expenses they have for the ladies and men they cater to every day. If you every get to feeling down and want a pick me up, go to Bethany and you will leave very happy, as I do every time I go. Love to all my Angels at Bethany, you are so precious to me! Love always and forever, Ruth Louise Williams My name is Edward Coxey and I was a patient at your facility. After two surgeries, I came to Bethany primarily for wound care. When I arrived at Bethany, I was amazed at the facility and staff. From the techs to the nurses, you receive great attention in your room. The techs help you with food service and keeping your room in order. My two primary nurses, Brandy and Larrie were great. The facility is clean, with associates who are so positive toward everyone they care for that I looked around the PT and OT rooms and marveled at what Faye Pryor and her staff accomplished with Rehab. I worked mainly with Sonya in PT and Susie in OT. As I said, my primary reason for being there was wound care. Jennifer and Beth were wonderful and caring. They made me feel comfortable and paid great attention to detail. I would (and have) recommend Bethany to anyone who had the need to go to a Skilled Nursing Facility.” You have a wonderful facility. Keep up the good work! Ed Coxey “To all of the techs and nurses and the two therapists who were so patient and kind to me, and to every helper who reached out a helping hand to help me no matter what the situation was, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. It made my stay at Bethany so comfortable and much more enjoyable than I expected it to be. I will never forget my stay there. Thank you again for everyone and everything you did for me. Very Sincerely, Peggy Harris We wanted to thank all of those involved in healing our Mother. Her hip wound is almost healed thanks to the nurturing attention that she received from Beth and Betty. Understanding various physical and mental problems along with emotional issues were made less difficult by your caring and supportive employees. Suzanne and Steve helped us to get all the necessary items to help with getting Mom home. Phyllis with PT is one of Mom’s favorites and we still have a problem getting Mom to do PT with anyone else. Anonda’s patient, mellow attitude helped handle Mom’s financial issues in accounting. There are many more names that we may have forgotten but all your unconditional help and caring will not be forgotten! The Ritter Family I just wanted to take this opportunity to express my and my family’s appreciation to every member of the staff at Bethany Health and Rehab Center for the excellent level of care provided for my father, Donald M. Pinkstaff Sr., since his admission there. Dad fell and broke his hip on Thanksgiving and after several days at Saint Thomas Hospital for hip surgery, we were able to have him admitted to Bethany. Throughout the entire process, from admission working with Maria, to working with Ananda on our financial issues, Steve, Suzanne, Brenda, Larry, Christie, and all of your nurses and caregivers, our experiences have all been exceptional and excellent in all phases. Although placing your parent in a nursing facility is a very difficult decision, your staff of professionals at Bethany have made this transition truly a blessing for my Dad. I truly feel that each and every on e of you are part of our extended family. Thank you for all the loving care you have extended to my Dad, I know how much he appreciates it even though he can’t tell you himself. With sincere thanks, Donald M. Pinkstaff Jr. and Family I can’t begin to thank the nurses and staff enough for all of the care and kindness extended to my mother during her years at Bethany. Not only did they demonstrate love and concern for my mother, but they extended that same love toward my daddy during the hundreds of times he visited with my mother. They treated him like loved members of their own families, and I will always be grateful. I can’t imagine any other place living up to the standard of care and concern at Bethany, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone in need of help. Annette Hawkins My Aunt has been a resident at Bethany Health and Rehab since July 26, 2010. I highly recommend Bethany Health and Rehab to anyone placing a loved one in a nursing home. Bethany Health and Rehab gives me great relief knowing my Aunt is in a loving and caring environment and not just a facility. The employees, nurses and staff go the extra mile. It’s not just a job to them. The administration, staff, admitting personnel, registered nurses and nursing aides made moving my Aunt from the hospital to Bethany Health and Rehab a smooth transition. Everyone was so helpful and caring. Housekeeping and maintenance does an excellent job of keeping the building clean and well maintained (building is always decorated with seasonal décor inside and out, this means a lot). If your loved one is able to attend and participate, there are activities for the residents to enjoy keeping them active and alert. (Calendar of events is always posted in the hallway) The charge nurses do an excellent job of keeping me informed of any changes that may occur. Excellent communication. Bethany Health and Rehab notifies you of a care plan meeting for your loved one. In this meeting you can ask any questions you may have concerning your loved one. Anytime you visit you are greeted with a friendly smile and “hello” from the receptionist and all of the staff in the facility. I have been very happy with my Aunts residence at Bethany Health and Rehab. God bless to all at Bethany Jack Hamlett Dear Bethany Health and Rehab Center I just wanted to say how much I appreciate each and everybody that works there. You have cared for my mother, Bertha Starnes, since May 2013. You have done so much with her that I was unable to do at home. It makes me feel good when I come to see her and she is almost always smiling and seems to be very comfortable. This is a job that truly comes from your hearts. I know Mom is in loving, caring hands. Thank You, Trish Chilton © Lorem ipsum dolor sit Nulla in mollit pariatur in, est ut dolor eu eiusmod lorem
